My Life My Responsibility

It took me lot of time to realize that my life is solely my responsibility.

Family and friends are there and may help you many times. But, we should be absolutely clear on this that our life’s responsibility lies on ourselves only. Any other support we get on the line should be considered as bonus.

I realized this very late in my life at the Age of 35. I must say that I’ve been very lucky to have such a great family that I have always been dependent on them despite I’ve joined a job and started making a living since I was 21.

I in fact didn’t care about my finances, investment, savings etc. I was like Papa is there. So why to worry?

Since 2016~17, I was thinking about starting my own business. Many of my family members were not in favor of leaving a job.

I thought and planned for many things in 2017. But honestly, I didn’t have courage to start my business own my own. All my thoughts were leading me to easy path to depend on family business.

But at beginning of 2018, I eventually quit the job and started the business in my Home Town with the help of Family. This was opening of another store of Family’s FMCG Wholesale business.

Things in business went very well because of my family’s goodwill in this business. The business was being run as per set rules and it has influence of my family as those have been handling it since last 25+ years.

Soon after everything was set, I started feeling like that I don’t belong here. But, during that time there was a very small side venture of one week. For that I was given end-to-end responsibility. I really enjoyed those 7 days and I gained lot of confidence in myself.

After that venture, I got a job opportunity back into Telecom. So I left my business and took that job in Dec 2018. It was a very short stint of 10 months. The second store that we opened is still running very successfully. But I don’t have any say in that.

When I took the job and returned to Mumbai at end of 2018, I gave myself 3 years to work upon myself and to start my own business.

So after settling down in first quarter of 2019, I focused on my learning, read many books, enrolled in many courses and programs.

During this time, I realized that I don’t have to be dependent on my family. I’m there to support them and they’re also there to support me. But, My Life is my responsibility and I’ve to make it work. If I want to start a business, I need to do the things to make it happen.

So Covid happened in 2020, I had spent 15 months again in my Home Town “Working from Home”. I felt helpless some time, But never stopped learning / practicing.

I even registered one company in 2020 with the clear intention that I’ll start the business once this Covid situation is clear.

I returned to Mumbai in June 2021, and I started paper work for my business. I launched my first business on 1st January 2022. As I had still fear of making a living out of it, I started it as side hustle.

This was the first breakthrough. This business was completely my responsibility. I’ve learned a lot.

But, since then, I have grown a lot personally.

As soon as you realize this one simple fact that “Nobody is coming to save you. You’ve to save yourself.” Your thoughts and mindset starts to change.

In the beginning it’s very difficult to get out of comfort zone. But making “My life, My responsibility” a Myntra for life can change your course forever.
